MANU RESERVE 4 DAYS
Manu National Park is located southeast of Peru, it is one of the largest parks in South America. The park area includes parts of the Andean department of Cusco and the jungle department of Madre de Dios. Manu protects more than 2 million hectares of territory rich in species of flora and fauna in a variety of habitats, including the Andes, cloud forests and lowland tropical forests. Manu also contains 10% of the world’s vascular plant species, including several species of figs and palms, as well as countless species of medicinal plants that scientists are currently cataloging. A single hectare of forest in Manu can have up to 220 species of trees, while a hectare of temperate forest in Europe or North America can only have 20 species of trees. This makes it one of the most biologically diverse parks on the planet.
We leave Cusco early in the morning, visit the interesting pre-Inca tombs of Ninamarca, the colonial city of Paucartambo, and then go down to the Cloud Forest. Here a thick layer of clouds provides perpetual moisture creating an ideal habitat for epiphytic plants such as bromeliads. This varied and fascinating world is home to the Gallito de las Rocas, the spectacled bear, orchids, tree ferns (one of the oldest living plants), mosses and lichens. At least 50% of the plant species found here are endemic to this region. We will stay in our hostel “San Pedro”
We will observe the mating ritual dance of the Gallito de las Rocas (Rupicola peruviana), the national bird of Peru, from an observation platform called “lek”. After breakfast we continue by bus (1 *) along the narrow road between waterfalls and canyons towards the city of Pilcopata (2 *) After 30 minutes by bus we will arrive at the Port of Atalaya where we will board our motorboat, starting our descent by the Alto Madre de Dios River for approximately 30 minutes to our private reserve “Erika Lodge” where we will spend the next two nights.
(1 *) Optional: Descent with mountain bikes from the San Pedro lodge (1700 masl) Cloud forest to Pilcopata-Selva alta (700 masl) (2 *) Optional: 1 hour rafting along the Kosñipata river where we will have the opportunity Enjoy a dip and of course enjoy the spectacular view of the Koñeq Canyon. Continuing along the Alto Madre de Dios river to the Erika lodge.
The great diversity of wildlife around the lodge is due to the wide range of altitudes of this beautiful site. Immediately after breakfast, we start walking and our guide will explain us about insects, medicinal plants, trees, reptiles, mammals, etc. Before returning for lunch we will have the opportunity to swim in the natural pools formed in the river near the lodge. Early in the afternoon we will have a short boat ride to visit a small lake near the Alto Madre de Dios River. Here we will have the opportunity to see the Hoatzin, a primitive bird, black alligators, many species of birds, insects among others. This will be our last night in this wonderful Amazon jungle. We will spend the night in the hostel.
We will wake up early to board our boat. After five minutes of travel, we will arrive at a small “Collpa”, a clay wall located near the riverbank where many species of parrots feed on minerals and salt supplements for their diet of seeds and green fruits. After this noisy and colorful show, we continue by boat to the port of Atalaya and then the bus back to Cusco, to arrive already late in the afternoon.
